JEWISH HISTORY
EMANCIPATION, INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AND THE JEWS

The 19th century was one of the most eventful and complex in Jewish history. While the previous centuries’ dynamics of persecution, pogroms, and poverty continued, new opportunities and challenges arose. The Industrial Revolution brought with it the promise of emancipation but also the threat of assimilation. Scientific thinking brought rationalism to the public arena but at the same time planted the seeds for a new form of antisemitism that would ultimately lead to horrors of the 20th century.

Change was afoot within the Jewish community, too. In response to the era’s threat of assimilation, the Hasklalah movement (Jewish enlightenment) emerged. At about the same time, the Mussar movement (Jewish ethics) arose and itself began to grow. In the meantime, the Chassidic movement continued to develop and grow.

Come join us to explore an historical period whose influences can be felt directly in our lives today.

THE JEWISH VIEW ON: SUCCESS, MONEY, POWER & FAME

And Much more...

Everyone today seems to want either fame, fortune, success, or status. While it’s easy to see how people who don’t reach their desired goals can think of themselves as failures, the truth is even those who reach their aspirations are likely to suffer feelings of dissatisfaction and emptiness.

Is the problem the goals we choose, or is the flaw our understanding of topics like satisfaction, success, happiness, humility, and achievement? The Mishna, the master-text of Judaism, says the problem is both! It offers deep insights into the goals we set and the values we prize.

Come join us and learn insights that, though ancient, are astoundingly relevant in our day and age.
