JEWISH HISTORY
NEW ERA, DEJA VU?

The first half of the 20th Century saw two world wars, a worldwide economic depression, and political revolution in Russia. For the Jewish people, the era was one of the darkest in our long history. It started with violent pogroms (that led to a major wave of emigration to the America) and ended in the horrors of the Holocaust. What lessons can we learn from both our suffering and how we reacted to this bloody and bitter era?

This course will examine not only the story of this tumultuous period in our history but also the lessons that can be applied in our times.

COURSE B*

THE JEWISH IDENTITY:
A STUDY OF THE BOOK OF ESTHER & WHAT IT TELLS US ABOUT OUR JEWISH IDENTITY

“I’m Jewish.” Am I, therefore, part of a race, an ethnic group, a nationality, or a religion? Am I a combination of two or more of these attributes? More broadly, what does being Jewish really mean?

In a world of globalization and instant communication, the yearning to understand what and who we are has grown exponentially. Fortunately, we don’t have look too far to learn the answers. They’re contained in the Book of Esther and its description of one of the Jewish people’s most dramatic existential crises.

The story of how the Jewish people survived that crisis reveals the eternal message of what it means to be a Jew and how to find redemption in even the most troubling of eras – like ours. Come join us as we look back to learn how we can deal with the world both today and tomorrow.
