INSTITUTE FOR JEWISH STUDIES

SPRING 2017

COURSE A

JEWISH HISTORY
OF THE MIDDLE-AGES

Countless books and documentaries have been put forward about the history of the Jewish people. For the most part, though, the stories they tell are simplified, surface level treatments. Our story is so much more: it's deeper, more complex, and subversive to the prevailing ideas of ancient and modern civilization.

In this course we'll focus on Jewish History in the middle ages, a period of immense persecution and hardship but, paradoxically, also a period of tremendous production and progress. Come learn the fascinating inner story of how we survived and thrived in a cruel and cold world.

COURSE B

THE SHEMA:
MONOTHEISM AND MEDITATION

A Study of Judaism's Most Profound and Treasured Contribution

The cherished words of the Shema —”Hear, O Israel, the L-rd is our G-d, the L-rd is One”— are etched in our hearts and ingrained in our collective psyche. The Shema is the Jew’s affirmation and devotion to his faith. It is a declaration of who we are and what we stand for. It is our proclamation of Monotheism for both ourselves and the world. The Shema expresses our mission statement and purpose in life. It is the most important Jewish prayer.

Join us and learn the meaning and depths contained within the Shema’s short sentence. Come see why the formula for Jewish survival is contained within its words.
